ST. PETER IN EASTGATE ‑ 140 years of history
11th century
First church. During the Civil War it was dismantled and stripped of its furnishings. It remained in ruins for over a century.
1781
Second church. Consecrated by Bishop Thurlow. The parishes of St. Peter and St. Margaret-in-the-Close were united together. (Traces of St. Margaret’s can still be seen at the south east corner of the Cathedral.
1869
Sunday, 16th May the vicar James Michaelmas Barrett made plans to build the third church of St. Peter.
Designed by: Arthur W. Blomfield a prominent Victorian architect.
Built by: Messrs. Otter & Binns of Lincoln.
Cost: £2,500 (£2,100 raised by subscriptions).
The original layout of the church seating was for 492 people including the choir stalls.
The foundation stone was laid on the 29th September (Feast of St. Michael and All Angels), by a member, Major Smythe, of Witham Masonic Lodge No.295 of Lincoln. A sealed bottle containing previous history from the 11th century church and other objects were put in a cavity of the foundation stone.
1870
29th June, St. Peter’s Day – the present church was consecrated.
1875
Re-hanging of the church bell (the old one had cracked. The cost of re-hanging,
10s. 0d. a day was £14 8s.8d.

1882
Decoration of the church – Mr. Bodley ARA was commissioned. Some of his decoration can still be seen in the chancel.
Altar Reredos erected – depicts our Lord’s call to St. Peter - removed during 1980s.
1893
Sunday School – at this time had 23 teachers and 160 children.
1894
Mr Alfred Shuttleworth (lived where the present day Lincoln Hotel is), and Mr. N. Cockburn offered to pay for the new organ and vestry in memory of Mr. Clayton. This work was delayed for some time.
1890
October – St. Peter’s Mother Union was started with 22 members and 5 associates. It still exists today.
1900
3rd February – the newly constructed organ was first used. It had 16 stops.
1906
New church heating boiler installed – cost £26.
1914
By the generosity of Alfred Shuttleworth there was the addition of the South aisle, west porch and the choir vestry.
Nave ceiling was enclosed as a ‘barrel roof’, the Rood Screen erected and St. Margaret’s Chapel, south aisle was dedicated.
1922
On 23rd March a wooden church hut was erected on Wragby Road and dedicated, for the expanding St. Peters church.
1936
A new estate sprang up, east of St. Peters. This then became the parish of St. Giles (possibly named after St. Giles Hospital which was on Wragby Road),
The church was brought up from the city of Lincoln stone by stone (formerly St. Peter-at-Arches church). St. Giles church was dedicated on the 4th April.1942
1942
A Gift Day raised £74 which finally paid off the Parish Hall.
1944
St. Peter’s Youth Fellowship was formed.
1947
Four Church Wardens staves - gift from Mr. C.V. Armitage.
1950
Hymn Book Stand was a gift from three donors.
1952
30th June - Centenary of Eastgate Church School was celebrated.
6th July – Evensong was a radio broadcast
1953
5th April – East Day Mattins was a radio broadcast
1954
Interior decoration of the church – cost £1,019.
1957
February – saw the purchase of the Vicarage at the end of Lee Road. It was formally called Denmar Lodge.
April – Mattins service was a radio broadcast
A new appointment to the office of Verger & Caretaker to look after the church and church hall (Mr. Ernest Schankin).
1958
The gift of a new Mothers’ Union banner by Mr. Hughes – memory of parents.
1961
New blue cassocks for the choir
1969
On closure of the Quarry (Mother & Baby Maternity Home purchased in 1944 by the Diocese), The Quarry Chapel was formed in the north aisle.
1970
29th June – St. Peter-in-Eastgate Centenary celebrations.
1971
Series 2 Holy Communion Service introduced.

Youth Club called ‘St. Peter’s 68’ was formed
Young Wives group called ‘Tuesday Club’ was formed
Men’s Club was formed

North aisle was altered to form the Louisa Smith Rooms for meetings etc...
2004
The choir disbanded after Easter Sunday service. A group a ‘singers’ was subsequently formed along with a music band
2006
August – Choir Stalls removed and a platform put in their place.
2008
1st October – St. Peter’s-in-the Pub (Poacher Pub, Bunkers Hill Lincoln).
December – the Chancel pillars were re-furbished in the Bodley style.
2009
September – new bell rope pull – gift of Mr. John & Mrs. Jean Rose.
6th December – Pews sold off and removed from church.
15th December – church transformed with the purchase of new chairs @ £132 each.
2010
Church porch decorated – doors stripped back to the original wood.
