JOURNAL ARCHIVE - 2009

December

Christ was born on Christmas Day, He was born in a stable and there He lay,
Rumours of His birth went every which way, in field of sheep shepherds say.
Three Kings illustrationSome angels with news of a King in straw,
Three wise men brought gifts of old: Myrrh, frankincence and gold.
And the rumours are true of this great birth. Saviour, Jesus, King of the earth.

To you He brings great joy, incredible new...baby boy.
Mary His mother praised the Lord, everlasting, Messiah, perfect Lord!

Thanks to Hannah Bowes-Smith for writing and sending in her Christmas poem.

Alternative Halloween Jungle PartyAlternative halloween party held in jungle

Grab an apple floating in a bowl with your hands behind your bag, or even more difficult try eating an apple dangling on a string with no hands. Why is it that children always find doing things like that fun and easy. That was certainly the case at the alternative Halloween party, along with a short explanation why Jesus is the light of the world, lots of dancing, face painting, and of course the traditional 'nosh'.

Thanks to Sean for more pics.

Harvest Festival Ceilidh

After a successful Harvest Festival Supper last year Alistair Ward thought about doing something different this year, and came up with organising a Harvest Ceilidh (I can never spell that word! - Is that right?). Anyway from the photos it looks like everyone had an fun and energetic time. Thanks to Sean for the pics.

Cake sale for 'Lepra'.

Imogen and Emily did a cake sale to raise money for LEPRA, a charity that works in India and other countries. We raised £56.26 selling the cakes and are very pleased with the result. (From Emily Dowse)

Jungle Jamboree Holiday Club

Jungle Jamboree Holiday ClubForty eight children enjoyed themselves at the 2009 holiday club. After getting lost in space last year, they got lost in the jungle this year. The mind boggles where they will go next year. The three mornings focussed on the parables of the prodigal son, the great banquet and the lost sheep. It certainly stretches the imagination how to fit those into a jungle theme.

Here's some of the children singing the jungle jamboree theme tune at the holiday club.

St Peters in the Pub bike ride.

St Peters in the pub bike rideOver the past few years we have had a bit of an 'Indian October' with a feel of autumn yet remaining warm, so I would think this crew got quite a sweat on as they pedalled along the River Witham towpath towards Fiskerton and Bardney. Of course they had the compulsory stop for a cuppa and a cake (or two or three!) before pedalling back to Lincoln. Phew!!

It was all part of the community social event programme which is ongoing at St Peter's in the pub.

Thanks to Carrie Ann for the photo's

Katharines back from her Mission

Katharine Lund has just returned from 4 months in Lisieux in Normandy, France working with a missionary organisation called 'The Bless Network', and 6 months on a Latin Link placement in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. Read her account here. Thanks Katharine for sending it in and for your touching testimony in church on Sunday.

Every Church Needs a Musical Director

Our Music Director Geoff AndersonOur bands are growing! So much so that we are now experimenting with having a music group play at every main service, as well as St Peter's in the Pub and concerts outside of church. (Amongst many other things we are off to the Christmas market caroling, and in Castle Square for late night shopping). With all this going on we are really fortunate to have a fantastic musical director in Geoff Anderson. Thanks Geoff for all your commitment.

Here's Geoff playing an organ piece 'Lift High the Cross' , and as a contrast...

Here's one of our worship groups with our version of 'Lift Him Up Now'. (Thanks Proclaimers!)

Let's give God glory and worship him with lots of gladness and thankfulness.

The Tuesday Club

The Tuesday Club started its Autumn programme with a 'Bring & Buy' for a local charity. The evening raised £100 for 'STRUT in the Community'. This was a very good result as our membership is decreasing due to ill health, and also two members have moved from Lincoln to be nearer their families. We meet fortnightly in the Louisa Smith Room. Details of our meetings are in the Church Newsletter. Next event - Armchair Exercises, 2pm 15th September.

MP in the Pub!

Gillian Merron speaking to Bukky (one of our singers) and David (the sound man)Gillian Merron chatting to worshippers after the meetingGillian Merron Labour Member of Parliament for Lincoln heard about the planting of our new church at The Lincolnshire Poacher on Wragby Road. Not only did she hear about it but contacted Nick to arrange a visit, and along she came to our July meeting.

She was particularly interested in talking to Pete our resident puppet, but unfortunately he had left early so she had to make do with chatting to Nick! (sorry Gillian).

St Peter's in the Pub is fully committed to serving the community, through church and other activities, on the new Carlton Estate and Bunkers Hill area of the city where no permanent community centre has yet been built, and Gillian was keen to support the initiative. Thanks Gillian for taking an interest. You are welcome anytime.

Time of refection and creativity for Pentecost

A group of us gathered last Saturday for a time of reflection and creativity for Pentecost. Su and Carolyn led our reflection by performing a very thought-provoking drama which triggered off all sorts of feelings in us.
After lunch and time to mull over our thoughts, we set about responding in various ways.  Two of the group went outside to enjoy the sun while reading and writing. Others in the group also wrote, made collages, used pastels or fabrics to express their ideas.
When we gathered together at the end of the afternoon and shared what we had done, there was a real excitement at each person’s creativity and response to the Holy Spirit.

Big Bun Giveaway

Great Easter Hot Cross Bun Giveaway

It's Good Friday and it's The Carlton Shopping Centre. There are a few hundred hot cross buns to give away. Yes, that means free, for nothing, free gratis. There are also a few people from St Peter's in the Pub who are willing to explain why we have hot cross buns, and why Jesus died for us on this day. Needless to say all the buns went like hot cakes! (excuse the bun - sorry pun). Let's hope and pray that a few people who received them also listened to the message. Oh, it's also a big thank-you to the Co-op for providing the hot cross buns and to Carrie-ann for the photos. (more photos)

March

Made for Ministry and Mission

The fifth Sunday tied into the fourth purpose for God's plan for our lives. For those following The Purpose Driven Life series you will know what that is! (test time). For others click here and go to 29th March. It's surprising just how many opportunities for mission and ministry there are at St Peter's. I counted twenty two advertised around church in different ways. How many did you count? How many are you involved in? Remember: 'Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others'. 1 Peter 4.10. If you want to know who to contact then have a quick look in the centre spread of April's newsletter. We need you.

Comic Relief Cakes

Cake baking for comic reliefRed nose day logommm....cakes! Imogen and Hannah had this idea, that if they baked a few cakes they could add £15 or £20 to the £58 million raised so far this year by comic relief. So they had a cake baking bash, and guess what - sadly they didn't make their £20 target. No, they made a WHOPPING £82.05p.
We also hear that Hannah and Imogen had some other helpers in Emily, Amelia, Georgia, Amy and Rosie. We'd call that a kitchen full!

Well done girls, and well done to all the people who bought the cakes after the 10.30 service.

Praise Party

Thanks a million to John Hardwick and his monkey who came along to St. Peter's from Cambridge to run a 'Praise Party' of Bible stories, songs, dance routines, and juggling for 60 children on Saturday. Having not had enough after two hours on the Saturday John returned on the Sunday to run a another session at the morning service. Thanks again John and have a great time at Spring Harvest where it will be more like 5 x 60 children for you to
teach and entertain! (more pictures)

The Men's Weekend!

Mens weekend awayKnock Christian Centre on the edge of the Lake District was the venue for the inaugural St. Peter's Men's weekend. And a fine weekend it was too for the 21 men that were able to attend. A relaxed Friday evening was followed on Saturday by a walk along the shore of Ullswater. After freshening up, a veritable feast was thrust upon us; Jason's Somerset Chicken was met with rapturous applause and the chocolate cakes to celebrate Sean's and Will's birthday went down very well indeed. Thereafter the Stag Inn at Dufton provided good beer and an open fire for a perfect night.

Sunday saw us walking local to the centre and High Cup Nick was the aim of the walk. Low cloud obscured the view so Martin tried to describe the view whilst everyone else tried to imagine it! As we stood in the mist, Edward conducted a short communion service. It was informal, peaceful and very moving but what followed was awe inspiring. As we started to retrace our steps to the cars, the cloud dispersed and the previously invisible 750 feet deep valley appeared. If ever there was a moment to marvel at God's hand in creation that was it!

The weekend provided the opportunity, in the midst of busy working and family lives, for the men to get to know each other and support each other. We were all very well looked after; particular thanks to Jason for his hard work in the kitchen – top food!

Significantly, we also spent time together looking at aspects of Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life; a challenge indeed. Article - Martin Cooper     (more pictures)

Women's World Day of Prayer

The Women's World Day of Prayer service, at which 50 people attended, was held this year in St. Peter's. The service was designed by the women of Papua New Guinea. We were host to friends from St. Nicholas, St. Mary Magdalene, Bailgate and Burton Road Methodist, and the signing choir of hearing impaired from St. Matthias (who had the service signed for them).

The speaker was The Rev. Sally Myers who is new to Lincoln. She spoke of the special gifts which women have - with particular  reference to reconciliation. She challenged us to be proud of and to use our individual and God-given talents. A buffet supper and good fellowship followed when we were able to look at a display of artefacts from Papua New Guinea kindly lent by Jean Rose. Article - Gillian Roe

Pancake Party popular

Pancake party at Alexanders CafeAgain all seats were taken at Alexander's Cafe for the launch of our Lent initiative called 40 days of purpose. Was it the thought of getting stuck into loads of yummy pancakes or to listen to Edward that drew the crowd - that's what we want to know! There was certainly a buzz about the place, and lots of encouragement to join a house group and learn more about God's purpose for your life here on Earth.
(more pictures)
Interesting fact: The world average life expectancy is 25,000 days - Strange that not many people spend a few days thinking about what their purpose is here!

There is still time to join a group near to you if you want to - Just contact us.

Big crowd at 'The Pub'

Watching Pete the puppet
All seats were taken at St. Peter's in the pub on the first Sunday of the month. In fact Pete the puppet was getting a bit big headed (nothing new) as he heard that he will be in the Crosslinks newspaper soon. If you see him about in town for goodness sake don't mention it as we really think he is getting star struck. Pete the puppet even got into the video this week! Nick's talk was about being bold and strong to follow Jesus in the ups and downs of life. If you fancy coming along to St Peter's in the Pub the next one is on 1st March at 10am. (Always the first Sunday in the month) See you there.
