Mmmmm...Some difficult decisions to be made for this Christingle service. Candles or glowsticks that was the question, but after much consultation, deliberation, and prayer the traditional candles won. It's very difficult when there are so many children at the service and so many regulations to be mindful of. The only thing that everyone wants is for the Lord's name to be lifted high in a safe place and who better to ask to watch over us, and guide us than Jesus. Thanks to Emma Kennedy and the 3C's (Christingle Construction Crew), and Sean Morton for sending in the photo. |
| Well after one of the heaviest snowfalls for many years which forced over half of the schools in Lincolnshire to close, members of St Peter's in the Pub church family made the best of it by organising an igloo building afternoon. Lucky we had an expert in Justin who passed on his 'master igloo building skills' to everyone. The temperature tonight is due to go down to -10°C....surely no one planned to sleep in it! |
SPY (St. Peter's Youth) made the first of two return visits to The Oakes Activity Centre this month. They had an action packed weekend. It was a real chance to have some fun together, try out some new activities and build their faith at the same time. The next visit is over the weekend 10th - 12th December.
As this is written we have had 30 cms of snow in the Lincoln area so let's hope it clears by then. If not they will be taking sledges and building snowmen!
Following on from the success of the Superheroes Holiday Club many of the children who came along for the three mornings (and lots of new ones) also came along to an alternative to halloween party where they danced, played games, ate lots of goodies, and let off sparklers.
Thanks to Jo Smith for organising it and to Sean Morton for the photos.
Fifty children at this years holiday club dressed up in superhero capes and masks and heard about three special children in the bible who were all heroes themselves in different ways. They were David, Naaman's servant girl, and the boy with the loaves and fishes. All of the activities like dancing, puppet making, flour throwing and lots more were based around these three events....mmmmmm...flour throwing you might say, well this was a game where the children threw socks filled with flour at a nine feet high giant, yes a nine feet high giant. This was planned as a game for day one, but it proved so popular that Goliath got a 'bit of stick' on each of the three days. Watch the official Superheroes Holiday Club Video free of charge here!.
The 2010 St Peter's Men's weekend was held at the Knock Christian Centre. The centre is situated in the Eden Valley close to the Lake District . It was described as a 'relaxing weekend together' with a choice of walks - long or short - strenuous or easy. There were a few muscular aches and pains in evidence on the return of the 22 men who went, and one wife was heard to say ' typical men - no one wanted to be seen doing the easy short walk'!. However, listening to some of the men who went along, it sounded like they had a great time together, being both spiritually reflective and fun.
A visiting speaker was arranged who shared some thoughts over the course of the weekend about being Christian Men in their own settings.
A big thankyou goes out to Martin Cooper who arranged everything. Here are some photos.
Early October saw St Peter's second Harvest Ceilidh, but this time it was held in church. Wow! What a transformation - our new chairs made the floor area easily adaptable and opened up whole new horizons as to new and exciting uses for our church building. We think the Ceilidh was a sell out as the place was packed with people of all ages having a great time in an atmosphere of harvest celebration decoration. Everything was in place ready for our Sunday service when we thank God for all He provides for us.
A great big Thankyou to everyone who worked so hard to make the evening a success. The food was fantastic and what an array of puddings....mmmmmm...spoilt for choice. Here's to lots more social and church family events at St Peter's. Thanks also to Clinton for sending in the photos.
After THE BIG FEAST the free community day on the Carlton Estate got even BIGGER, and took on a new name. It's now called Carlton Day and took the format of a small village fete with childrens sports, a free barbeque, live bands, stalls, a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Flypast and many other things going on. It's difficult to say how many people came along as people drifted in and out all afternoon, but 300 burgers and 300 hot dogs were woofed!
Here are a few photos:
Thanks to Clinton for sending the pictures in.
We have never had so many young people tootling off to Christian summer camps as we have this year. One of the camps was at 'The Knock Christian Centre' in Cumbria. Watch this space for more information being put together by members of the team that went. Here's a preview....
Will WARD is on his gap year. He is working for a Christian holiday company on waterfront safety boats in Samos Greece, and is then off to the French Alps as a chalet host.. He has decided to keep SPY (and everyone else) up to date with his BLOG! To follow him CLICK HERE.
Hello Jo. Who's Jo you might ask. Well Emma has moved on from the drivers seat in the church office to pastures anew, and Jo has taken over (Thanks Emma for all your hard work over the past few years). Also over the past few weeks the office has taken on some new furniture and a new computer system. The church is now Wi-Fi enabled and a web cam system has been installed to aid the creche and childrens group helpers to watch and hear the talk. The new projection system is geared up to powerpoint shows, big screen internet and film shows with potential for live video links. So lots of techy stuff going on...Anyway if you ring the church office in the mornings Monday to Friday you can say hello to Jo who will aim to get your query answered.
Talking about morphing (see below) the annual St Peter's 'Patronal Festival' has morphed into the 'Parish Festival' which rolls off the tongue a bit easier and sounds a bit less formal. There was little formality judging from the photos of the event. It looks as though the weather, races, food and fellowship were all great fun. Thanks to Clinton Thacker for the photos (loads of them).
Nick has been with us for four years now - can you believe that. Anyway thanks to the generousity of our church he has not only morphed from a curate into a fully fledged vicar but he is staying with us to continue the fantastic work he is doing on the Carlton Estate and Bunkers Hill area of Lincoln. Although his official title is 'associate vicar' (sounds posh doesn't it) I reckon we'll still just call him Nick!
It's now virtually six months since the removal of the pews. Feedback is generaly positive.
It certainly gives a more flexible, open, comfortable and informal feel to the building.
You may have heard of a podcast - well have a listen to the latest pewcast!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH to everyone who supported the cycle magic event held at the Carlton Centre!
I think you'll agree it was a lovely day - I was amazed how everything came together and seemed to work very well. God blessed us with sunshine.
Simon (Mr Cyclemagic) took 23 unwanted bikes to Leicester, and sold 10, so felt he had had a good day. He would like to see a similar enterprise set up in Lincoln, and would help us move towards that.
Vincent (Mr Bikeit) was kept busy, as was the PCSO Kat. I think we made about 50 cups of tea/coffee.
Cyclemagic is a Leicester based charity which collects unwanted bikes and rebuilds them for people with disabilities. It also refurbishes and sells bikes on, to support the charity; they do school events and Bikeit, and gnerally promote two wheels as opposed to four!

Originally designed to cater for St Peter's youth 'Sunday Night Live' has taken on a new format of Praise and Prayer, and is now becoming more popular with all age groups.
With traditional and contemporary music, and creative ways to pray in a relaxed way it's the place to be on the third Sunday in the month.
Why not give it a try.
Participate or just sit, listen and reflect - its up to you.
Here's a live recording of Sarah, Will and the band singing 'Hosanna'.
Not a bad turn out this year as 19 St. Peterites went over to Butlins at Skegness to seek a bit of spiritual refreshment and inspiration at this years Spring Harvest. This years theme was 'Living distinctively as Christians in a time of uncertainty', and the group picked up on day four which focussed on 'belonging together'. Thanks to Graham Kendrick, Steve Chaulk and his merry band of teachers, preachers, worship leaders, drama groups, childrens and youth teams, who all made for a good day out....PHEW! - a long rewarding day.

Thanks to all the folk who helped arrange the Maundy Thursday passover meal. This was a continuation of the experiential theme for Easter 2010 at St Peter's (see below). About 50 people shared in a re-enactment of the passover meal, and had the opportunity to reflect on the events of the evening prior to Jesus' betrayal on the Mount of Olives.

The Easter celebrations this year had a slightly different twist as we found different ways to 'Experience Easter'. One of the many ideas was to combine our worship with a reflective journey around the Easter story depicted in artistic displays. As well as being integrated in to the Good Friday service the displays were also turned in to a learning experience for the children of Westgate Junior and St Peter in Eastgate infant schools.

On the 7th March the Oscar awards were held at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.
Not to be outdone St Peter in Eastgate held it's equivalent event on the same night. This is the night of the black tie and posh frocks for all those involved with St Peter's Youth... (albeit a little 'tongue in cheek' - from the photo's it looks like they had a ball! - Thanks to Liz Bowes -Smith for the photo's)
Our new sermon series based on the gospel of Mark started this month, and will run through until the end of Lent. You can follow it here.
The end of December saw the removal of the pews as part of the re-ordering scheme. They have been replaced by oak chairs to assist our goal of making St Peter's a comfortable and welcoming place for the whole community in 2010 and onwards. We can now begin to imagine how we might use our church throughout the week as well as on Sundays. If anyone has some history about the pews and would like to add it to this article then please send it in.
(Thanks to Liz Bull (our verger) for the pictures.)

There is nothing like a good clean up to get the new year's re-ordering off to a sparkling start, but can anyone put a name to the person, who is polishing the top of the rood screen? We are struggling to identify him/her in this grainy image!
